NBC Universal
NBC Universal was officially over taken by its new owner. The deal regarding the company’s sale was pushed through after a long time of careful planning. What made the planning and the over-all deal longer was the requirements set by the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department.
NBC’s new owner is no other than the Comcast Corporation. Comcast now owns 51% of the shares of NBC after successfully acquiring it from General Electric Co.
Comcast Corp is actually one of the most stable companies in the country. This company is considered as the No.1 provider of videos and internet services among the residential areas in the USA. Since Comcast is powerful, US regulators had spent a long time before closing the NBC purchase deal.
The primary reason for the rigorous regulation undertaken by Comcast before they were able to acquire NBC was competition. The Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department made sure that Comcast’s acquisition of NBC would not stifle some of its online video competitors such as Hulu.
As part of the deal, Comcast agreed to some terms. This includes relinquishing of management rights on NBC’s partly owned Hulu. Besides NBC, Hulu is also owned by News Corp. and Walt Disney.
Due to the take-over, NBC is now called as the NBC Universal LLC. This entity has its assets which includes all of the broadcast stations of NBC and cable channels such as USA E! and Bravo. These assets also cover the Universal movie studio and all of the theme parks.
